American Idol group night antics! (or, WAAAAH! They stole our idea!)

For me, last night was one of the least enjoyable hours of American Idol in recent memory. Has anyone else noticed that the drama this season seems even more over-the-top than in seasons past? It's as if FOX feels like they have to compensate for the loss of Paula by stoking up a bunch of pointless controversy. Well, they're over-compensating if you ask me. And it all came to a head last night. First off, I must confide that the "Hollywood week" portion of AI has always been my least favorite part of the show, mostly because it appears so unorganized. The rules for the week, what few there are, seem to change every year, so it ends being an opportunity for the judges and producers to pretty much advance, or get rid of, whoever they want. Have you ever noticed that there are several people that seem very promising from the audition rounds, but you never even see them in Hollywood week? I've always found that peculiar. So knowing that things aren't necessarily on the up and up going in, the contestants are then put through hell by being given their group marching orders at around 10 or 11pm at night, and then being forced to coalesce into groups and figure out their songs and choreography well into the wee hours of the morning. This is done for no other reason than to stress everyone out in the hopes that the contestants will crack and supply the drama and friction the producers can then exploit on the show. Yes, I realize that they've been doing this for years, but it seems like the foolishness of the whole awkward and contrived situation finally reached the point of overkill last night. I mean, c'mon, do we really care or believe that Neapolitan stole the a cappella Bad Romance idea from Destiny's Wild?? I certainly don't. And to make matters worse, the producers now have Ryan Seacrest explaining to us what we just saw. Nothing on television bothers me more than this. I have a brain. I am able to process what you just showed me. I don't need Ryan walking down the aisle and hyping it up even more by telling me that "everyone sitting here in this theater is mentally drained and emotionally exhausted!" Really, Ryan? Did you ask them all? I'm pretty sure I just watched them yelling at and being otherwise generally uncomfortable with each other for the last 20 minutes, so I figured it out on my own, thanks. And I don't mean to be slamming Ryan, he's just doing his job, but I'll be very happy when we finally get down to the Top 24 so we can get to some actual singing. Unfortunately, we've got 2 more nights of "Hollywood week" to cringe through first.
