This morning, during the Wake Up Your Brain question, the word "gay" was used in the question. A listener named Kevin was very upset about this segment and commented at www.facebook.com/radiowakeupcall Take a listen to the segment. Then read the comments. Were the members of the Wake Up Call out of line during the segment?
On a side note, we are not posting this audio in an effort to prove that the Wake Up Call is being picked on. We always want to do what is right. If the general consensus is that the Wake Up Call crossed the line, then we will be happy to right this wrong. Why? Because that is what we do. We do what is right. Our intentions were never to be hateful or hurtful, but if that is how the segment came across, let us know. Comment at www.facebook.com/radiowakeupcall
Thanks. Here are the messages:
Kevin (a listener) wrote this original message on Facebook: You guys should be ashamed of yourselves today. Discussing about what men think is, "gay," or not. Using the term, "gay," as a perjorative is not acceptable. As you apologized even before you read the story, you obviously knew it would be offensive. I guess when KRXQ's morning program did the same thing in 2009 you weren't paying attention to what happened to them. Sad, sad, sad....
Here are the replies that followed:
Gavin Wake Up Call Hey Kevin. I appreciate your concerns on this and, as the brother of a gay guy who I love more than anything, I go out of my way to stop the use of "gay" meaning "stupid." That being said, we were quoting a study in a men's magazine that we found. But beyond that, I'm not sure if was used in a perjorative way. At least not the way I took it. If smiley faces are considered somewhat feminine (which I think they are) then I think it's okay to say that it's a little gay. I'm not saying they're stupid, I'm saying their less masculine.
I'm sorry you were disapointed and offended by us. My brother was listening and seemed to think it was funny because after we did it he texted me "I'm offended : )" Know that there is no bigger champion of the LGBT community in Sacramento media than us. If you have any other concerns or want to talk about this more...don't ever hesitate to reach out to us again.
Jason Wake Up Call Kevin, I apologized because the study was put out by a guys magazine. They worded it the way I read it. As a show, we are all very aware of how hurtful the word gay can be if used this way. Now, why did I choose this question? Two reasons. One, if it is "gay" as the study showed....then I am happy to be "gay" because I send smiley faces all the time. Two, it gave us a chance to slip in the message that it's not appropriate for people to use "gay" with a negative connotation.
Kevin, what I did this morning was choose to NOT edit something I found online. The reality is, the word gay is still used as a negative word. In my opinion, we did more GOOD by reading the study as is, than by changing it up. Why? Again, we were able to say that we apologize if this offends anybody, but this is how the study came out. In my experience, ignoring or editing issues is not the way to make change happen. You need to raise the issue. If only one person asked somebody else..."why did they apologize for saying the word gay", then I think my mission was accomplished. Kevin, we obviously touched a nerve with you, but I hope you can step back and look at what we did. Our comments this morning could have been hateful and hurtful, but they weren't, because we aren't hateful or hurtful people. We've actually been called out for being "too pro gay people" by a few listeners. I'm not making that up. Why? We, as a show, openly support gay rights. If that's "too pro gay people" then ok....we're "too pro gay people". I like to think that I am personally just "pro good people". Gay or straight, if you are good to me, I am good to you. If you treat me with disrespect , I will ignore you. Thoughts? (oh and halfway through writing this, I found out that Gavin was also writing back to this comment. If our points are similar, that is why. I have no idea what he wrote)
Kevin (listener): I don't think you did anything to point out that using gay as a perjorative was a bad thing. I think you perpetuated it. It doesn't matter if you have a gay brother or are good people or from Philly (like I am) or have done great things in the past re: LGBT issues. You guys screwed up today. Go back and listen to the recording of the segment and see what you think. Listen to it as a 15 y/o kid would. And did you know that yesterday was National Coming Out Day and that Frank Kameny, one of the LGBT community's greatest leaders died at 86 y/o yesterday? Very poor timing. This isn't about one gay guy being hypersensitive. This is about a real problem that you added to today. I don't expect you to be role models but would you get away with making these comments about any other group? Think about it.
Bob (listener): Great points, Kevin. I let that word slip out in that context from time to time, and it is probably something I learned to do when I was 15 (or 13, or 11). But if I think about what I say before I say it, I don't want to, and choose not to, use the word gay in a way that insults many people I love and respect.
Jason Wake Up Call Kevin. I will go back and listen to the segment from this morning's show. I'm am sorry that you feel the segment set a bad example. I can't change your opinion. I will say that it does matter if you have a gay brother. It does matter about what you've done in the past. We have spent the past four years developing a relationship with our listeners. We share our lives, opinions, and values on the air every single morning. There are always going to be things we say and do that anger our listeners. If that didn't happen from time to time, we would be a VERY boring show. Now, there is a HUGE difference between being honest and opinionated and being rude, hateful, and disrespectful. You say we were out of line and that we screwed up. I will go back and listen to the segment and let you know. People who know me, know that I am 100% willing to admit when I am wrong. We did know about yesterday being National coming out day. We wanted to do something on the air, but due to the strict time restrictions we are under, we didn't do a full blown segment on the subject. To say it is really poor timing is not fair because there are always things in the world that make something "bad timing" for somebody. This is something that might end up coming up on our show again. I love these discussions. It's just hard to find the time to fit them into our show.

Almost half of those questioned said they preferred sex while under the influence of alcohol because it helped them to lose their inhibitions and be more adventurous.
Researchers, who surveyed 3,000 women aged between 18 and 50, found the average woman has slept with eight men, but was drunk with at least five of them.
On two of these occasions they couldn't even remember the man's name the next day.
Three quarters of women claimed they felt more able to let their hair down and go wild after a few drinks.
Four out of ten have 'always' been a bit tipsy when they have slept with a partner for the first time. But astonishingly 48.5 per cent said they preferred sex while under the influence.
The study also found that 75 per cent of women said they liked to drink before getting into bed with their husband or boyfriend. Some 6 per cent of women have never had sex while sober.
More than half of women polled claimed drinking with a prospective partner was 'part of the dating process' so they were bound to be a bit drunk when they had sex.
It was also revealed 14 per cent of women in a relationship can't face sleeping with their partner unless they had a couple of glasses of wine beforehand.
Kathryn Lakeland of Femfresh, which carried out the study, said the results showed how women are severely lacking in confidence.
She added: 'The fact alcohol plays an integral role in their love lives shows that women are looking for a boost in self-esteem when it comes to their bedroom antics.
'Whilst many women claim they only drink before sex because it is part of the dating process, a large percentage will actually refuse to get between the sheets without a bit of Dutch courage.
'But in doing so many women will be losing self control and this is when drunken one night stands are more likely to occur.'

A boss in Norway makes women on his staff wear a red bracelet when it is their time of the month.
Here is the full story from the DailyMail.co.uk:
Boss orders female staff to wear red bracelets when they are on their periods
A boss in Norway has ordered all female staff to wear red bracelets during their periods - to explain why they are using the toilet more often.
The astonishing demand was revealed in report by a workers' union into 'tyrannical' toilet rules in Norwegian companies.
The study claimed businesses were becoming obsessed with lost productivity due to employees spending too much time answering the call of nature.
It found 66 per cent of managers made staff ask them for an electronic key card to gain access to the toilets so they could monitor breaks.
Toilets in one in three companies were placed under video-surveillance, while other firms made staff sign a toilet 'visitors book', the report by the Parat union said.
It added: 'But the most extreme action was taken by one manager who made women having their period wear a red bracelet to justify more frequent trips to the loo.
'Women quite justifiably feel humiliated by being tagged in this way, so that all their colleagues are aware of this intimate detail of their private life.'
The report, which did not name the firm imposing red bracelets on female staff, has now been passed on to Norway's chief comsuner ombudsman Bjorn Erik Thon.
He said: 'These are extreme cases of workplace monitoring, but they are real.
'Toilet Codes relating to mentrual cycles are clear violations of privacy and is very insulting to the people concerned.
'I hope and believe that this is not representative of the Norwegian working life in general.
'We receive many complaints about monitopring in the workplace, which is becoming a growing problem as it is so often being used for something other than what it was originally intended for.
'We will be carrying out a full review of the rules surrounding employment and privacy over the coming year.'

According to an article by LiveScience.com, researchers think picky eaters have been suffering from an illness that has gone unnoticed for hundreds of years.
Selective eating disorder is more commonly known as very picky eating.
The illness works like this: Instead of having a couple foods they'd rather avoid the way most of us do, people with selective eating disorder feel there are very few foods they are even capable of eating.
So people who are picky aren't doing this just to be stubborn. Extremely picky eaters just experience food differently than the rest of us.
Most people with the disorder are usually embarrassed by their limited choices of food so they'll try to keep it hidden by avoiding social events that involve food or drinks or by making up excuses to avoid eating.
Selective eaters tend to like similar foods, with an emphasis on the bland and processed. They love salt. French fries are a favorite. Bacon is the only meat many of them will eat. Fruit, vegetables and alcohol are a no-no, with light beer and raw carrots being possible exceptions.
Grown-up picky eaters tend to have early negative associations with food. Some have admitted to having severe acid reflux as a baby or childhood gastrointestinal issues.
Researchers recommend that family members of picky eaters should know that the person isn't doing it to be "willful and bratty."
Doing that might get a picky eater to feel safe enough to try something new.

A man recorded his experience with the TSA after refusing to go through an x-ray machine. When they tell him they're going to pat him down, he tells the TSA agent, 'If you touch my junk, I'm going to have you arrested.'
Here is the audio from his recording:
TSA Junk Story
Here is the complete story from Sign On San Diego:
TSA ejects Oceanside man from airport for refusing security check
SAN DIEGO â John Tyner won't be pheasant hunting in South Dakota with his father-in-law any time soon.Tyner was simultaneously thrown out of San Diego International Airport on Saturday morning for refusing to submit to a security check and threatened with a civil suit and $10,000 fine if he left. And he got the whole thing on his cell phone. Well, the audio at least. The 31-year-old Oceanside software programmer was supposed to leave from Lindbergh Field on Saturday morning and until a TSA agent directed him toward one of the recently installed full-body scanners, Tyner seemed to be on his way.Tyner balked. He'd been reading about the scanners and didn't like them for a number of reasons, ranging from health concerns to "a huge invasion of privacy." He'd even checked the TSA website which indicated that San Diego did not have the machines, he said in a phone interview Saturday night."I was surprised to see them," said Tyner. He also did something that may seem odd to some, manipulative to others but fortuitous to plenty of others for whom Tyner is becoming something of a folk hero: Tyner turned on his cell phone's video camera and placed it atop the luggage he sent through the x-ray machine. He may not be the first traveler tossed from an airport for security reasons but he could well be the first to have the whole experience captured on his cell phone.During the next half-hour, his cell phone recorded Tyner refusing to submit to a full body scan, opting for the traditional metal scanner and a basic "pat down" -- and then refusing to submit to a "groin check" by a TSA security guard. He even told the guard, "You touch my junk and I'm going to have you arrested."That threat triggered a code red of sorts as TSA agents, supervisors and eventually the local police gravitated to the spot where the reluctant traveler stood in his stocking feet, his cell phone sitting in the nearby bin (which he wasn't allowed to touch) picking up the audio.According to TSA at the time the controversial body scanners were installed, travelers would have the option to request walking through the traditional metal detector but that option would be accompanied by a "pat down."Why Tyner was targeted for a secondary pat down is unknown.Asked if he thought he looked like a terrorist, Tyner said no. "I'm 6-foot-1, white with short brown hair," he said Saturday night.
Was he singled out for "punishment"?Before Tyner was told he was getting a "groin check," a TSA agent is heard on the recording telling another agent "I had a problem with the passenger I was patting down. So I backed down. He was obnoxious."Tyner is sure he was talking about someone else. On the whole, with a single final exception, he found the agents "professional if standoffish."He did marvel that while his own situation was being deliberated, many passengers passed through the metal detector and on to their flights with no pat-down. "One guy even set off the alarm and they sent him through again without a pat-down," he said.Once he threatened to have the TSA agent arrested though, events turned surreal.A supervisor is heard re-explaining the groin check process to Tyner then adding "If you're not comfortable with that, we can escort you back out and you don't have to fly today."Tyner responded "OK, I don't understand how a sexual assault can be made a condition of my flying.""This is not considered a sexual assault," replied the supervisor, calmly."It would be if you were not the government," said Tyner."By buying your ticket you gave up a lot of rights," countered the TSA supervisor."I think the government took them away after 9/11," said Tyner."OK," came the reply.More senior TSA administrators showed up, and one San Diego police officer. Tyner's personal information was taken down and then he was escorted out of the security area. After he put his shoes back. His father-in-law, a 40-year retired deputy sheriff, can be heard pleading in the back ground for some common sense.Tyner went over to the American Airlines counter where an agent, to his amazement, refunded the price of his non-refundable ticket. Before he could leave, however, he was again surrounded by TSA employees who told him he couldn't leave the security area. One, who kept insisting he was trying to help Tyner, told him that if he left he would be subject to a civil suit and a $10,000 fine.Tyner asked if the agents who had escorted him from the security area would also be sued and fined. The same man who told Tyner he would be sued and fined if he left, also insisted that he did not tell him he couldn't leave. So Tyner left. Two hours later he wrote the whole experience up on his blog and posted the audio files to YouTube. You could say it has gone viral.By Saturday evening, 70,000 people had accessed the entry and 488 comments were posted to the blog item. Those comments are divided over Tyner's experience. "Only 5 percent say I'm an idiot," he said.Far more applaud him for "standing up" to the security forces. Many more people share his disdain for how airport security is conducted."People generally are angry about what is going on," said Tyner, "but they don't know how to assert their rights....there is a general feeling that TSA is ineffective, out of control, over-reaching."If Tyner has touched some undercurrent of resentment, he doesn't want to be the guy who leads the charge to overturn the machines. "I'm not so sure I'm the right person to start a movement," he said.If he isn't, he can sound at times like he's auditioning for the job.Tyner points out that every terrorist act on an airplane has been halted by passengers. "It's time to stop treating passengers like criminals and start treating them as assets," he said.
A new study says that men who have sex regularly will live longer.
Here is the article from the Telegraph.co.uk:
Healthy sex life makes men live longerItalian medical researchers carried out a series of studies as part of the conference, and found that a healthy sex life means fewer cardiovascular problems for men.The investigation was carried out by the Italian Society of Sexual Medicine who are holding their annual congress in the city of Modena.Dr Emmanuele Jannini, coordinator of the research, said: "What was evident from the research was that men who had active sex lives and were faithful to their partners had fewer cardiovascular complaints and lived longer."Increased sexual activity produces more testosterone, which leads to less depression and a better cardiovascular performance which means an improved metabolism."Dr Jannini said the research has been carried out by the University of Florence on 4,000 men and the study revealed that those who were unfaithful had a poor cardiovascular performance because they were "also coping with the increased stress of their infidelity."She added that the study had shown a poor quality sex life could also lead to depression.Dr Jannini added that an increased amount of testosterone produced during sex was good for men because it burned off excess sugars and reduced the risk of heart disease. She added: "People who have diabetes especially benefit from a healthy sex life and an active sex life also helps avoid prostate problems for men."
Testosterone is the principal male sex hormone and is an anabolic steroid.Previous research has shown that it is essential for health and wellbeing as well as the prevention of osteoporosis. The conference also heard how too much time spent speaking on mobile telephones appears to "put sperm to sleep" and can pose a risk for male fertility.According to the preliminary results of a study by Rome's La Sapienza University and the Santa Maria Goretti Hospital at Latina, south of the capital, "there is a correlation between cellphone use and a worsening in sperm mobility."Andrea Lenzi, president of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine (SIAMS), said: "The waves appear to put the sperm to sleep."The data are, however, preliminary and we are verifying the presence of other factors: people who speak on their cellphones a lot are often more stressed or they smoke and drink more, and that can impact sperm quality."The study, which examined sperm from men using mobile phones from a minimum of half an hour to a maximum of four hours a day.

A new study shows that teens who text a lot are more likely to engage in sexual activity or drug use. Here is an article from CBSnews.com:
Study: Hyper-Texting Teens Have More SexTeens who text 120 times a day or more - and there seems to be a lot of them - are more likely to have had sex or used alcohol and drugs than kids who don't send as many messages, according to provocative new research. The study's authors aren't suggesting that "hyper-texting" leads to sex, drinking or drugs, but say it's startling to see an apparent link between excessive messaging and that kind of risky behavior. The study concludes that a significant number of teens are very susceptible to peer pressure and also have permissive or absent parents, said Dr. Scott Frank, the study's lead author."If parents are monitoring their kids' texting and social networking, they're probably monitoring other activities as well," said Frank, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.Frank was scheduled to present the study Tuesday at a meeting of the American Public Health Association in Denver. The study was done at 20 public high schools in the Cleveland area last year, and is based on confidential paper surveys of more than 4,200 students. It found that about one in five students were hyper-texters and about one in nine are hyper-networkers - those who spend three or more hours a day on Facebook and other social networking websites.About one in 25 fall into both categories.Hyper-texting and hyper-networking were more common among girls, minorities, kids whose parents have less education and students from a single-mother household, the study found.Frank's study is billed as one of the first studies to look at texting and social networking and whether they are linked to actual sexual intercourse or to other risky behaviors."This study demonstrates that it's a legitimate question to explore," said Douglas Gentile, who runs the Media Research Lab at Iowa State University. The study found those who text at least 120 times a day are nearly three-and-a-half times more likely to have had sex than their peers who don't text that much. Hyper-texters were also more likely to have been in a physical fight, binge drink, use illegal drugs or take medication without a prescription.Compared to the heavy texters, the hyper-networkers were not as likely to have had sex, but more likely to have been involved in other risky behaviors like drinking or fighting.A Kaiser Family Foundation study found that about half of children ages 8 to 18 send text messages on a cell phone in a typical day. The texters estimated they average 118 texts per day. That study also found that only 14 percent of kids said their parents set rules limiting texting.Other studies have tied teen texting to risky or lewd behavior. A Pew Research Center study found that about one-third of 16- and 17-year-olds send texts while driving. And an Associated Press-MTV poll found that about one-quarter of teenagers have "sexted" - shared sexually explicit photos, videos and chat by cell phone or online.

A boy in Illinois called 911 to complain about his dadâs cooking.
Here is the article from the DailyHerald.com along with the audio of the 911 call:
Buffalo Grove police take 911 call from boy complaining about dinnerBuffalo Grove authorities fielded a 911 call from a 10-year-old boy complaining about an unhappy meal served by his father, police confirmed Tuesday. The boy dialed 911 about 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, and said while the dinner his father gave him was edible, it wasn't to his liking, Buffalo Grove police Cmdr. Steve Husak said.Husak didn't know what food was served. The boy's father was at the home at the time of the call, and police did speak to him, Husak said.An officer advised the boy over the phone of when it is proper to dial 911, but no further action was taken.âMost people utilize the 911 system correctly, however there are rare occasions in which citizens need to be reminded of the parameters of what is and is not a police matter," Husak said.A similar incident happened in November 2009, when a 15-year-old Buffalo Grove boy called 911 to complain that his parents took away his video game system. The teen questioned if his parents had legal grounds to take away his joystick. Police told him to listen to his parents and no charges or arrests were made.Listen to the 911 call here:911 Call - Dinner Disagreement
According to the article these would be the strongest type of anti-bullying legislation in any state.
Here is the article from Yahoo:
NJ weighs new bullying laws after Rutgers suicide
TRENTON, N.J. â New Jersey lawmakers introduced an "anti-bullying bill of rights" Monday that one advocate said would be the toughest state law of its kind in the nation, a proposal that follows the widely publicized suicide of a Rutgers University student who was humiliated online. The proposal was introduced by a bipartisan group of legislators and advocates and seeks to augment laws New Jersey passed eight years ago. It would require anti-bullying programs in public K-12 schools and language in college codes of conduct to address bullying.State Sen. Barbara Buono, a Democrat from Metuchen who was one of the main sponsors of the 2002 law, said she has learned since then how prevalent bullying is as parents of tormented children have called her office. The original law only encouraged anti-bullying programs and wasn't doing enough, she said."It's approaching 2011, and it's unfortunate that we're legislating things like this," said State Sen. President Stephen Sweeney, a Democrat from West Deptford.Nearly every state now has some kind of law seeking to prevent or deal with bullying in school. Such laws began appearing after two students believed to be seeking revenge for being bullied killed 13 people and themselves at Colorado's Columbine High School in 1999.The proposed New Jersey legislation, though it's been months in the making, was introduced after a nationwide wave of suicides by teenagers who were tormented because it was believed they were gay.The most visible was last month in New Jersey when 18-year-old Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River after his roommate allegedly secretly webcast Clementi's dorm-room tryst with a man. The roommate and another student are charged with invasion of privacy, and authorities are considering whether a hate-crime charge is merited. In a news conference Monday organized in part by Garden State Equality, the state's biggest gay rights group, parents of gay teens who face bullying told heartfelt stories. They included David Zimmer, of Ridgewood, who said his 16-year-old son is taking most of his classes online rather than face the students who call him "fat faggot" and the school officials he said haven't always done enough about it.It's not just gay students who are targeted.Stella Serpa, now 37, an Army veteran and administrative caregiver at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, recalled how she was tormented as a child because her mom was poor, then as a high school student for her thick glasses and thin physique. Twenty years later, her eyes welled up as she remembered hearing other girls call her "surfboard" and throw their bras at her in the locker room. The memories of those years have been strong lately."I come across the George Washington Bridge every day on my commute," said Serpa, who lives in Fort Lee. "And to think of a young man standing out there on that bridge on the brink of emotional helplessness and taking a dive into the Hudson, yeah, it has had an impact on me."Serpa said the only thing that kept her going as a teen was a belief that she could get into college and lead a better life. The bill's provisions include requiring public school staff to be trained in suicide prevention and how to deal with harassment, intimidation and bullying.Bullying prevention programs would be required of schools. Currently, most New Jersey schools have them, but they are only encouraged â not required. Schools would have to form safety teams that would shape policies and review how bullying is handled.Even public colleges and universities would be affected by a requirement for an anti-bullying policy and enforcement mechanism in student-conduct codes.State Sen. Diane Allen, a Republican from Edgewater Park, said one important feature is that school websites would have to clarify who's in charge of the bullying policies. Right now, she said, it can be hard for parents to determine that.Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie, said the administration would look at the bill if it's passed â and given its bipartisan sponsors, that seems likely. While Christie hasn't commented on the bill, he did express sympathy to Clementi's parents and anger over the circumstances of the suicide.
