Your TV could be killing you!

notvThat's right, too much time in front of the tube leads to death. Scary! Here's the scoop: if you spend more than 4 hours a day watching television, you have an 80% greater chance of dying from heart disease, and a 46% chance of dying of pretty much anything else, regardless of whether you are overweight or not. Wow! The study was done in Australia, and was published yesterday in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. How is this possible, you ask? The reason is given as this: "when we're in that sitting posture, we're not using our muscles,and we know from extensive evidence that muscle contractions are important for the body's regulatory processes." They say the same thing goes for sitting in front of a computer screen. This is something that we all kind of knew intuitively, that's it's not good to sit on your butt all day, but seeing data like this is definitely eye-opening. The scariest part of the article was that even if you do exercise regularly, sitting still for 4 hours is still very dangerous! So even if you just jogged 5 miles, plopping yourself in front of the television for the next few hours is very bad for your heart and other body functions. And since most TV is crap anyway (sorry, that's me editorializing!), turn off the TV and go do something constructive, or at least active!! Click here to read the article for yourself.
